No Catfights For Mya, Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Pink

What do you get when you put four pop and hip-hop divas together in a recording studio?

If your answer is flying fur and scratched egos, in the case of Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Pink and Mya, you couldn't be more wrong.

"We were all in the studio together, and we got along - no cat-fighting," Mya said of the foursome's re-recording of '70s girl group LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade." "It's a great thing - females getting along for a change."

With Missy Elliott and Rockwilder producing, the quartet remade LaBelle's disco classic about a Creole courtesan for the "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack, due April 24. Their rendition will serve as the soundtrack's lead single. "It's hot," Mya said.

The original "Lady Marmalade" hit #1 in 1975.

Household Face -- Not

Christina Aguilera had a big number in this week's Grammy Awards show, but her face recognition is less than Richard Simmons'.

This discovery comes courtesy of the Kaplan Thaler Group advertising agency, which asked people to identify various photographs of famous celebrities. Fifty-two percent could recognize Simmons' face, but only 29 percent could identify Aguilera.

Some comfort for the singer: Low public recognition doesn't necessarily equal low impact. Only 4 percent of the agency's respondents could recognize a portrait of Thomas Jefferson.

Kaplan Thaler uses Simmons in its latest ad for Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo.

Last Year's Best New Artist Returns With Latin Flair

Christina Aguilera's roots are showing -- her Latin roots, that is.

Last year's Best New Artist will take to the GRAMMY stage this Wednesday to showcase a pair of songs from her debut Spanish-language album, Mi Reflejo, which is nominated for Best Latin Pop Album. Aguilera, who is partly of Ecuadorean decent, first showed off her heritage at the inaugural Latin GRAMMY Awards show, which took place at Staples Center in Los Angeles last September. That night, she brought the house down with a performance of "Genio Atrapado," the Spanish version of her hit "Genie In A Bottle."

Aguilera is also nominated this year for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "What A Girl Wants," which appears on her self-titled album.

Late Sunday night at Staples Center, again the venue for the GRAMMY Awards show, Aguilera joined a cadre of dancers and a full horn section to run through a medley of "Pero Me Acuero de T" and "Falsas Esparanzas," which she will perform on the telecast. Seemingly ascending from the heavens in a sparkling pod, Aguilera emerged onto a platform and stepped down a winding staircase into the company of her dance crew. A spectacular light show rained down on the tightly choreographed dancers, and the bright, spicy horns punctuated the already infectious vibe of the performance. In short, it promises to be one of the highlights of the show.

Wanna see for yourself? Keep surfing through GRAMMY.com for all the latest show updates, and tune into the 43rd Annual GRAMMY Awards show at 8 p.m. on CBS Television on Wednesday night. The show, hosted by Jon Stewart, will also feature performances by U2, Madonna, Faith Hill, Sheryl Crow & Shelby Lynne, and much more.

Christina: Perforated

Is Christina Aguilera becoming a human pin cushion? The sexy songbird had both nipples pierced at Andromeda tattoo parlor on St. Marks Place last May, and now she's thinking about getting even more holes. Piercer Michael Addonisio, who perforated Aguilera's chest, says a pal of hers called last month to inquire about getting Aguilera's "nose or navel pierced." Addonisio, who has also pierced Alyssa Milano's ears and Tia Carrere's navel, says he never gets starstruck punching holes in celebs. "Christina had to expose her breasts to me," he admits. "But I've been doing this for 11 years. She was just another customer."

Possible Performance At Brit Awards

Ricky Martin's told Radio 1 he's happy to perform at the Brits later this month, even though the organizers haven't asked him yet.

Ricky told us: "I'll be here definitely. If they want me to perform I'll perform, of course. I will probably perform with Christina if she's here yes, definitely."

When they heard the news the Brits organizers said they have a slot to fill and they're going to give him a call.

Elsewhere in the report, hear her talk fondly about the place during a press conference, where she is presented with a bouquet of flowers from a life-size version of cult Japanese character Hello Kitty.

The 19-year-old singer expresses her excitement over her two Grammy nominations. In the first she is up against Madonna for the Best Female Pop Vocalist gong but it's the nomination for Best Latin Pop Album that thrills her the most.

Christina's Spanish-language long-player, which she recorded last year, takes her back to her Ecuadorian ancestry.

She says of its release: "It's really nice to be recognized for my first Latin album 'Mi Reflejo'. I'm really excited that I was recognized for that this year."

"It's a whole growing and learning experience, to understand my background and where I came from, and just continue to go further."

Christina Wants Even More MTV

Christina Aguilera's record company seems to keep her on a short leash. The pop tart wanted to appear in a video for girl group 3LW's next single, "I Can't Take It Anymore," even though they're competing for the same teen audience. But Aguilera's label, BMG, wouldn't give her permission, say record-industry sources. So the trio will go ahead and shoot the sexy song in Los Angeles on February 15 without Aguilera, who sent her regrets.

Christina Talks 2001 Plans

While on her Latin American tour, Christina took time out to speak with MTV Latin America about her plans for 2001, the Grammys, and her duet with Ricky Martin. Here is the interview, along with RealVideo clips, as posted by DreamyEyesFan at Christina's LiveDaily message board.

Another singer who leaves the club of Mickey Mouse! He has, cannot be... This is what much people said when listening Christina for the first time, thinking that this young girl was nobody that, by those things of the destiny, obtained a record contract. But they only had to listen to its songs to realize that this tiny woman... Yes that can sing. If Britney Spears is the new sensation of the industry of the entertainment, Christina Aguilera must stand out by its great voice. Now that their powerful buccal cords have the deserved credit, Christina goes by the world treating to conquer each one of its corners. Recently it was in one of those of the city of Mexico and it commented to us on his preferred disc of year 2000, its nominations for the Grammy prizes and their plans for the future. In addition, we spoke a little of the video with Ricky Martin, Nobody Wants To Be Lonely. The complete interview with Christina Aguilera will transmit in Connection MTV Tuesday, 30 of January. 2 and 3 of February, will be the Britney versus Christina Weekend. And in addition, you can participate and vote here for your favorite star in the survey of Britney versus Christina in MTVla.com...

MTV: Which was the album Y2K that you liked more?

Christina Aguilera: What is a Y2K album?

MTV: An album of the last year...

Aguilera: Oh! An album that truely I liked was the one of Destiny's Child, " The Wriyting's on The Wall ". What else...? Let's see.... I do not know, don't come to mind right now at this very moment, but there were several good albums. The one of Destiny's Child is surely the one that I liked more. There were many good bands of rock that also sent albums and Madonna also removed a disc that also was good.

MTV: Which are your plans for the 2001?

Aguilera: Yes, I have many plans, as soon as this promotional tour finishes that I am going to Latin America, I'll go away for Asia and soon return to Los Angeles to begin to work in my next album. I have so many ideas... so many different ideas, it's going to be very good. Finally I am going to be able to put things that I have written, I am going to try to create something of music and it's going to be more of me this time, so I am well contented. It's probably going to out sometime in the Fall (of the United States), sooner or later, I do not know, we will see. When it's ready it's ready.

MTV: Tell us on your nominations for the prizes Grammy 2001?

Aguilera: On my two nominations? Very happy. Best Pop Vocalist, that is a good nomination and also having the opportunity of being recognized by my first album in Spanish, "Mi Reflejo" is an honor also, and it seems that I am going to do something off my album in Spanish, so I am very happy.

MTV: What so was to work with Ricky Martin?

Aguilera: Ricky Martin is one of the most good looking men of the world, but also he is adorable. A gentleman in everything and he made me feel comfortable...

MTV: How did this collaboration arise between you?

Aguilera: His record label approached mine and asked if I were willing to do it and I responded: "of course, it will be fun!". I love to collaborate with other artists. I thought that it would be a great opportunity. We had a lot of fun doing it.

MTV: Which is the concept of the video?

Aguilera: We recorded it in Los Angeles with one of his favorite directors, Wayne Isham. He did a good job. It is about nobody wants to be lonely, as the title says it. In the video we're not lovers, we did not want to reflect that but between both there is a mutual connection, but in the video never we are really close. During the video they see us almost touching and almost being together. In a take, our bodies are crossed, reflecting that never we could be never be together. And that is to be lonely. It has brilliant visual effects, trying to reflect that it is impossible to reach to us between if due to those special mountain effects, and whatnot. The video already out and we had lots of fun doing it.

Video clips: one, two, three, four, five, six.
